Understanding Auto Enrolment
The law on workplace pensions has changed. Every employer no matter how small or large, who has at least one member of staff paid via a PAYE scheme will have duties in enrolling those who are eligible into a workplace pension scheme and contribute towards it.
Automatic enrolment as it is known, it is automatic for staff – they don't have to do anything to be enrolled into a pension scheme, but it is not automatic for you as employers. The only time that Auto Enrolment duties do not apply is when a company or individual are not considered to be an employer including if your company has:
- a sole director company, with no other staff
- a number of directors, none of whom has an employment contract
- a number of directors, only one of whom has an employment contract
- ceased trading
- gone into liquidation
- been dissolved
How does AE affect my Business?
Auto enrolment is being phased in and began with the largest companies in October 2012 and will continue until all employers are brought on board by 2018.
Although your date for beginning auto enrolment may be several years away, we are urging all employers to plan ahead for the financial impact it will have on your business.
Employers with an existing pension scheme will need to make sure their current scheme meets with all of the qualifying workplace pension requirements. Alternatively, they can opt for the government's default scheme, the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), if they do not wish to upgrade an existing scheme or implement a new one, or an alternative such as NOW: Pensions
